Generational Wealth-Building through BIPOC Homeownership

Research shows that the growing racial gap in homeownership rates, home equity and overall wealth has contributed to the broader racial disparity in wealth accumulation among Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities:

Launched in partnership with LISC San Diego and the Urban League, the SDF Access Granted Homebuyer Program – formerly known as the San Diego Black Homebuyers Program, the first of its kind in California – provides up to $70,000 in grants to qualifying prospective Black, Latino/a, Native American, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander homebuyers as well as financial literacy education.

The program is administered by the Urban League of San Diego County and LISC San Diego.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, about 31% of Black families, 39% of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families, 40% of Latino/a families, 47% of Native American families, 58% of Asian families own homes in San Diego as compared to 61% of White, non-Latino/a families.

Nationwide, the median white family has 10 times the wealth of the median Black family and more than five times the wealth of the median Latino/a family. The wealth gap, which vastly exceeds the income gap, is the result of years of public policy and private behavior designed to exclude families of color from opportunities to build wealth.
