San Diego’s Future
In San Diego, more than 74,000 young children (ages 0 to 5) lack access to licensed care and nearly 48 percent of children under age 5 do not have a stay-at-home parent or an available licensed childcare space. Through advocacy and research, such as the 2022 Workforce, Childcare + Change report, SDF works to increase awareness and advocacy of the challenges faced by working families and providers in trying to access or create quality, affordable childcare to ensure our region’s children have healthy development experiences required to thrive in school and beyond.
Childcare provider support includes Steps to Family Childcare Success (STEPS), which serves childcare providers from immigrant and refugee communities, and the Childcare Provider Grant Program, which supported providers offering essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Early Childhood Initiative helps to:
Support Children's Well-Being
Ensuring access to affordable, quality care, education and mental and behavioral health resources are essential to the health, development and future success of San Diego’s children
Increase Access to Early Education
Working with partners to increase the number of affordable, high-quality early childcare and education spaces available in critical regions of San Diego supports working families and the regional economy
Strengthen Small Providers
Providing access to training for in-home family childcare providers, many of whom are women, helps improve the economic livelihoods of small business owners and their families, while ensuring the children in their care thrive
