Responding & Adapting
San Diego is a beautiful place to live, but our region faces multiple threats due to the impacts of a changing climate.
Since 2006, the Climate Initiative has supported organizations that build equitable climate resilience through research, education, community engagement and programs that benefit historically underserved communities and low-income, climate-vulnerable populations.
The Climate Initiative helps to:
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Reaching carbon neutrality will require significant reduction of emissions across all sectors of the economy such as transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable fuel sources like wind, solar and hydro power to generate electricity.
Inequitable Impacts of Climate Change
People of color and underserved communities face the greatest risks from a changing climate. For these populations, climate change can be a “threat multiplier” for other economic, social and environmental challenges.
Community Readiness to Address a Changing Climate
Local environment nonprofits only receive 2% of philanthropic funding globally and are in critical need of capacity-building resources to improve communications, evaluation, and their ability to access government and philanthropic support.
