Letter from our Chair
I hope that all 4SRanch~Del Sur Community Foundation (4SCF) members are off to a good 2016!
On Thanksgiving Day I had the honor of once again attending our community’s Thank you Run! This is a favorite of mine and a fun tradition. The Thank You Run gathers community members of all ages on Thanksgiving Day for a walk, jog, or run. The run was started by Ray and Theresa Shay, founding members of 4SCF.
Event proceeds help support Helen’s Closet and the 4SRanch~Del Sur Community Foundation.
Helen’s Closet was started by Ray and Theresa in memory of Theresa’s mother, Helen Mok, who died from ALS in 2008. Through the ALS Foundation, Helen’s Closet provides needed equipment to those with ALS to improve their quality of life. This includes walkers, wheelchairs, ramps and other equipment.
The Thank You Run generated $10,000 in proceeds for 4SCF, $9,000 of which will be put in to grantmaking for 2016! The remaining will be put into our endowment to forever benefit our community.
Because of the support of members like you, the run, and the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program we will continue to make our impact in the community! So far we have granted more than $175,000, and look forward to increasing our role as a community foundation year after year.
Please be sure to invite your neighbors and friends to join us and our investment in 4SRanch and Del Sur. Thank you for all you do!
Grantee Spotlight: Loving Life Foundation
One of our 2015-2016 grant recipients, Loving Life Foundation, presented at the recent 4SCF member mixer at Capri Blu. Executive Director Gabriela Abbot spoke about the $5,000 grant and how it allowed them to partner with school counselors and social service representatives in identifying deserving students to provide them with new bikes, helmets, odometers, camelbacks, and locks.
The children meet weekly with their counselor or social service representative to report the amount of time spent, miles ridden, and water consumed during their bike rides each week.
The program’s goal is to document 30 minutes per day of physical activity and 64 ounces of water consumed for each student receiving the bikes. At the end of each semester, the student from each school with the most logged miles will be recognized at an awards celebration.
This program is seen as a success in the community and schools and they are looking forward to future partnerships which allow them to expand their reach in 4S-Del Sur.
Coming up
Our 9th year grantmaking focus is on programs that encourage civic engagement through science and technology. We hope that you can join us as we present the final ballot for members, a fun way to hear from our grants committee members on the proposed programs.
