On Thursday, June 11, native San Diegan and Los Angeles Dodger Adrian Gonzalez, along with his wife Betsy Gonzalez, continued their tradition of community engagement by hosting the 2nd annual Gonzalez Scholars Give Back volunteer event.
New and current recipients of the Adrian Gonzalez scholarship helped in the pre-build of three new houses in El Cajon for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that provides homes for deserving families in San Diego.
The event was an opportunity for students to learn the value of community engagement through volunteerism. As Adrian put it, “You were all selected because of your involvement in the community as well as your academic success, and we encourage you to continue that as you pursue your educational dreams.”
The students worked side-by-side with the pro baseball all-star and his family to construct seven wall frames and a fence for the yard that will surround the new homes in the fall of 2016.
Gonzalez’ History of Giving in San Diego
For years, Adrian and Betsy have been committed to helping students attain a college education and fulfill their dreams.
In 2008, they established a fund at The San Diego Foundation to empower underprivileged youth in the areas of athletics, education and health. A year later, the Gonzalez’ opened a scholarship fund at The San Diego Foundation and make time each year to personally interview candidates.
This year, 183 students applied and nine were selected to receive a four-year renewable scholarship. Since inception, 52 students have been selected for the Gonzalez Scholarship.
We want to thank Adrian and Betsy for their tireless commitment to giving back to their community, and our congratulations to the 2015 recipients of the Adrian Gonzalez scholarship!
