At San Diego Foundation (SDF), we are driven by our vision for just, equitable and resilient communities where every San Diegan can thrive, prosper and feel like they belong. This dedication was recently recognized by several awards honoring our organization and our team members.
From organizational excellence in philanthropy to individual contributions in community impact, these accolades underscore the meaningful work being done every day at SDF to uplift San Diegans.
2025 TRUST Award for Excellence in Philanthropy
In January, The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego honored SDF with the 2025 TRUST Award for Excellence in Philanthropy. This distinguished award is given annually to a nonprofit organization that exemplifies transparency, responsibility, unity, stewardship and trust, reinforcing its role as a leader in philanthropy.
The TRUST Award recognizes our commitment to effective governance, social equity and sustainable community impact, all of which are deeply embedded in our mission and daily operations.
Under the leadership of our Board of Governors and President & CEO Mark Stuart, we have strengthened our philanthropic partnerships, expanded community-driven initiatives and ensured that donor contributions create enduring philanthropy and enable community solutions.
Dr. Pamela Luster, Chair of the SDF Board of Governors, accepted the award on behalf of the organization at the 21st Annual Nonprofit Leadership and Governance Symposium. In her remarks, she emphasized the vital role SDF plays as a trusted partner in advancing equity, supporting local nonprofits, and driving positive transformation across the region.
“Winning the TRUST Award is really meaningful because as we do the work to create just, equitable and resilient communities where everyone can thrive, to be a trusted partner in that is huge,” Luster said upon accepting the award.
“We’re excited about the fundraising and friend-raising that we’re doing for our Fifty & Forward Campaign, but we’re even more excited about getting those resources out into the community to do the incredible work that needs to be done here. We’re just incredibly grateful.”
Pamela Gray Payton Named a Black Leader of Influence by the San Diego Business Journal
In addition to SDF’s organizational recognition, we celebrate Pamela Gray Payton, Vice President and Chief Impact and Partnerships Officer, for being named one of San Diego’s 50 Black Leaders of Influence by the San Diego Business Journal for the fourth consecutive year.
This annual recognition highlights Black leaders across various industries who are driving change, breaking barriers and making a lasting impact in their communities.
Since joining SDF in 2020, Pamela has led the Community Impact team through record-breaking grantmaking years while implementing SDF’s Strategic Plan to advance racial and social justice, foster equity of opportunity, and build resilient communities.
Under Pamela’s leadership, SDF has launched impactful programs and initiatives, including the Black Community Investment Fund, which has granted over $4 million to support education, employment and entrepreneurship. She also spearheaded California’s first Black Homebuyers Program (now the Access Granted Homebuyers Program), helping dozens of Black families secure homes.
Her dedication to equity and social justice is reflected in her leadership at SDF. Pamela’s recognition as a Black Leader of Influence is a well-deserved honor, and we are incredibly grateful for her contributions to our community and our mission.
