November 19, 2024 – Encinitas, CA – Hand to Hand, a women’s collective giving circle affiliated with Coastal Community Foundation at San Diego Foundation (SDF), has awarded $48,500 in grants to local nonprofit organizations that support women and girls by providing resources to programs that empower change and self-sufficiency.

“The six nonprofit grantee organizations will provide a variety of vital services,” said KJ Koljonen, Chair of Hand to Hand. “From academic support, trauma-informed healing, access to the outdoors, athletic training and mentorship, and care for our female elders and veterans, we feel these organizations will make the broadest impact on the future of women and girls in San Diego.”

This year’s Hand to Hand grantees include:

  • Casa de Amistad Centro de Enseñanza – Kinder to College Study Companions: works with underserved students from kindergarten to 12th grade to reach their full potential, achieve academic success and pursue post-secondary education. Staff and volunteers support students with access to academic support and educational enrichment; social and emotional wellness; technology access; college and career readiness support; academic scholarships and parent support.
  • Poetic Justice – Trauma-Informed Poetry Program at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility: works with women experiencing incarceration by providing a trauma-responsive creative writing program. Through the very difficult process of addressing grief, shame, and loss female participants also address the harm they have caused and the harm their children now experience. Putting language to the unspeakable supports healing from root causes of trauma and PTSD, and provides participants with pathways forward.
  • VETS – Beyond The Uniform Foundation: supports veterans and military spouses in their transition to civilian careers. Key components of the program include skills assessment, coaching and a tailored Career Success Packages (CSP). Participants benefit from continuous coaching, mentoring, and networking to aid in their job search and integration into the civilian workforce.
  • ElderHelp of San Diego – Sustaining Health and Wellness for Senior Women in North San Diego County: provides personalized services and information that help seniors live independently and age with dignity in their own homes, including care coordination, housing services, food and supply pantry, and other services. Over its 50-year history, ElderHelp has successfully assisted seniors and their families in San Diego County, including 5,000 women annually.
  • EcoLogik Institute – Leadership Academy: hosts an annual Summer Experience that connects female and female-identifying youth to the outdoor spaces and science in America’s National Parks. The academy creates a continuum of support for the young women who have participated in itsprograms by offering ongoing outdoor learning and female mentorship opportunities, community engagement training, career development, and environmental stewardship apprenticeships at a national park.
  • Exposure Skate – Skate Rising & SeshE Programs: helps girls and women build confidence, connect with positive role models and cultivate compassion through skateboarding and community service. The youth program teaches skateboarding, wellness and community service to girls, ages 4 – 16. Classes, camps and events involve girls in skateboarding clinics alongside other activities, such as assembling support kits for the unhoused and food drives for emergency shelters.

Hand to Hand is a group of San Diego women who grant funds to local nonprofits that promote economic self-sufficiency and positive change in the lives of women and girls. In the spring of 2008, a group of 19 women began to discuss ways that they could make a difference in the community for women and girls through their joint philanthropy, and Hand to Hand was founded. As a charitable fund at Coastal Community Foundation at SDF, it has since grown to 87 members.
