Early childhood literacy takes center stage as Dr. Seuss Foundation and San Diego Foundation (SDF) launch a new $15 million initiative to transform reading readiness for young children across San Diego County.

The collaborative program, dubbed Ready to Learn, builds on a successful three-year partnership between the two organizations. To date, they have invested more than $3 million into expanding access to early educational opportunities and improving literacy outcomes for children in the region through the Early Childhood Initiative at SDF.

Expanding Impact

Ready to Learn makes an even larger impact, thanks to a permanent $15 million endowment established by Dr. Seuss Foundation at SDF. This endowment provides sustainable, long-term funding to support early literacy efforts in perpetuity.

“Dr. Seuss Foundation is excited to deepen our partnership with San Diego Foundation to create lasting change in early literacy,” says Jay Hill, Executive Director, Dr. Seuss Foundation.

“Through Ready to Learn, we’re honoring Theodor Geisel’s legacy by ensuring that the joy of reading reaches children during their most formative years, setting them on a path toward lifelong learning and success.”

Looking at the Data

The focus on early literacy couldn’t come at a more critical time. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the Nation’s Report Card, both reading and math scores among fourth- and eighth-graders remain below pre-pandemic levels.

Locally, the San Diego Council on Literacy reports that nearly half of third-graders in the San Diego Unified School District do not meet state standards for language arts. Even more concerning, 20-25% of adults in San Diego County read prose at the lowest literacy levels.

“A child’s brain is 90% developed by age 5, making early literacy essential for school readiness and lifelong success,” says Mark Stuart, President and CEO of San Diego Foundation.

“Strengthening our collaboration with the Dr. Seuss Foundation ensures every child in San Diego County has the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in reading during those crucial first five years.”

Inaugural Grantees

As part of the launch of Ready to Learn, the two foundations will award $1,050,000 in inaugural grants to 18 local nonprofits on the frontlines of early literacy support.
