May 11, 2016 – San Diego, CA — Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI), a summer program funded by the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) that nourishes a passion for science and math in San Diego’s next generation of scientists, has received a $60,000 grant from The San Diego Foundation.
“San Diego’s innovation sector is a cornerstone of the region’s economy and our growth,” explains Kathlyn Mead, President and CEO of The San Diego Foundation. “With the rising cost of tuition and demand for STEM learning programs, many young adults are not afforded the opportunity to pursue a career in science and technology. Academic programs like LSSI remove these barriers that disproportionately affect low-income students and expose more youth to STEM fields to increase future career opportunities.”
LSSI is a summer-long paid research internship for high school students that includes a weeklong “boot camp” covering topics like biotechnology laboratory skills, safety practices and soft skills, and placement at one of San Diego’s world-renowned research institutes. LSSI participants also receive college credit upon completion. Each year more than 300 high school students apply for one of 40 spots.
The San Diego Foundation Blasker Science and Technology Fund is supporting LSSI to help prepare San Diego’s increasingly diverse population for the innovation economy. Investing in programs that nurture and develop the next generation of scientists strengthens the quality of life for all San Diegans and builds the region’s future prosperity.
“We are honored to have The San Diego Foundation Blasker Science and Technology Fund award us this grant,” says Peter Callstrom, SDWP CEO. “LSSI has been successful at introducing 444 students since 2005 to the life sciences and engaging them in great career opportunities. The new funding will provide more students with work-readiness, training, and invaluable experiences.”
