The San Diego Foundation (SDF) team is here to help you by delivering world-class philanthropy and service and expertly responding to your needs.
In this Meet our Giving Impact Team blog series, we’re interviewing each of our team members so you can learn more about the individuals who are helping you give confidently to make the most social impact.
In today’s post, meet Hector Borja, Manager of Philanthropic Initiatives.
What is your favorite part about working at SDF?
It should come as no surprise, the people! I’m fortunate to be working alongside talented folks dedicated to transforming lives and making lasting change that moves our communities forward.
What do you enjoy most about partnering with donors and philanthropists?
Partnering with folks who share a commitment to our region and mission-driven organizations makes collaboration enjoyable. In my current role, I am particularly inspired by understanding a donor’s ‘why’ and finding ways to empower them to make an even greater impact.
How did you get started working in the nonprofit sector?
I started working in the nonprofit sector 15 years ago as a seasonal summer camp staff. At the time, I was pursuing a career towards becoming a middle school teacher and thought working at a seasonal summer camp setting would be fun.
However, the universe had other plans because the mentors and cause-driven leaders I met early in my career taught me the elements of teaching could take place beyond the classroom walls.
How do you make time for work/life balance?
Early in my career, I was challenged to view this social construct not as a matter of balancing both, but instead finding a blend that is manageable for that day, week or month.
Finding balance is a never-ending battle to make sure we can give ourselves equally, but I find a temporary compromise to be more acceptable. I accept that there are some days or weeks that will temporarily be work-heavy, while other days or weeks will prioritize life—and that’s okay.
What social impact area matters to you the most?
I can trace my passion for the environment back to the hikes I led as a seasonal summer camp staff. It has only grown stronger since becoming a parent. I’m a proud father to two amazing young ladies who have ignited in me a deep commitment to preserve and protect our resources.
I want future generations to enjoy the benefits of our natural environment as much as I have.
When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time?
I have various interests. Although I enjoy going for bike rides around the neighborhood, I can easily spend 30 minutes of free time watching recipe videos for meal ideas. I’ve always enjoyed watching cooking shows, and these days, I draw inspiration from Pati’s Mexican Table and anything by Chef Claudette Zepeda!
What’s your favorite spot in your neighborhood?
Cafeina Cafe is widely known as the go-to spot for flavorful and high-quality coffees. It’s more than a coffee shop; it’s a local gem in the heart of City Heights, San Diego.
I appreciate their simple yet inspiring mission to offer a secure and inviting space for their guests. Whether you start your day with a cup of their delicious specialty coffee drinks, enjoy the pan dulce of the day, or indulge your sweet tooth in curated ice cream flavors, it’s easy to see why this is a favorite spot of mine.
What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
Spending time outdoors is a family value. Most weekends, you can find us at a local beach or bayfront, enjoying the water. When we’re not playing in water, we enjoy camping in the Laguna Mountain Area or at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in the spring and winter. We even have our sights set on a weekend backpacking trip!
What is your favorite destination outside of San Diego?
An annual tradition I have is traveling with the family just a few miles south of the U.S. and Mexico border for the summer holidays. It’s a family tradition to spend a few days during summer break exploring the vibrant region of Baja California Norte. Last year, we ventured on an epic road trip to Bahía de los Ángeles. It was spectacular and I highly recommend it!
My family and I are counting down the days to our next trip to our favorite destination outside of San Diego!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
The one piece of advice I’ve remembered is to surround myself with peers who complement my strengths in order to encourage collaborative work. I have used this piece of advice countless times throughout my career because it allows me to acknowledge my strengths while being intentional around areas that require more attention and focus.
This is an ongoing process because it requires being vulnerable and shining a light on areas that need improvement.
