Ask Patty Brutten why she and her husband, Marc, give so generously to causes supporting our region, and you’ll get an answer as succinct as they come: “My husband and I have worked very hard, and we have been successful, which has allowed us the ability and the opportunity to give back to the community. It’s something that we feel both fortunate and a responsibility to be able to do.”

Patty and Marc—whose philanthropy focuses on youth furthest from opportunity, education, the environment and mental health services—have provided nearly $5 million in lifetime giving through San Diego Foundation (SDF) since opening an SDF donor-advised fund in 2003 and an SDF scholarship fund the following year.

Today, Patty Brutten sits on SDF’s Fifty & Forward Campaign Council, which is driving the Foundation’s 50th-anniversary goal of granting $500 million to realize our region’s greatest opportunities in three key areas: education, children and families, and the environment—and raising $1 billion to help shape our community’s future.

A Philanthropic Journey

Born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank, Patty moved to the region upon enrolling at University of California San Diego, where she met her future husband and graduated with a degree in economics.

Her career began in the analysis and investment side of real estate, eventually becoming a real estate broker and selling investments, before teaming with Marc to launch the businesses that have grown into Westcore Industrial Properties, a leading national industrial real estate acquisition, development, and asset management firm; Westcore Europe, a real estate acquisition and management investment firm based in London; and San Diego-based Brixton Capital, a prominent real estate private equity investment firm focusing on retail and multifamily real estate opportunities.

Success in their business ventures translated into giving back to the community. Generously.

“At first, it was just smaller gifts at fundraisers and the like, $500, $2,500, here and there, then those gifts grew, as we grew,” says Patty.

That grew even more substantially when they began partnering with SDF. A sampling of recipients benefitting from the Bruttens’ largesse through their SDF donor-advised and scholarship funds: the Barrio Logan College Institute, Outdoor Outreach, and Friends of San Pasqual Academy.

“Patty’s passion for ensuring all San Diego youth have opportunities to experience our amazing parks and beaches has been transformative for Outdoor Outreach and the youth we serve,” says Outdoor Outreach Executive Director Ben McCue.

“She helped us purchase the van we’ve used to bring thousands of youth to Torrey Pines, Anza-Borrego and Joshua Tree, she has been instrumental in the collection and reporting of data to help us direct our resources to the most park-deficient communities in the region, and she has been a strong advocate for our work within her large circle of friends.

“Patty’s generosity has had ripple effects across San Diego. Thanks to Patty, we’re closer to achieving our vision of an outdoors for all that inspires and sustains healthy and vibrant communities.”

In addition to their work with SDF, Patty and Marc also created and serve as trustees with the Brutten Family Foundation, which has funded grants directed towards the likes of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, Voices for Children, San Diego Rescue Mission, Oceana and more.

Meanwhile, Patty and Marc helped all three of their adult children open SDF donor-advised funds. Despite her impact, Patty can be demure in describing what she’s doing for our community.

“I’m just another human being who is trying to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, and support programs that make a positive difference for the planet on which we all live.”

Fifty & Forward

Through their SDF donor-advised and scholarship funds, and through Patty’s work on the Fifty & Forward Campaign Council, the Bruttens are partnering with SDF to amplify their giving and create lasting change for the issues they care about most.

As SDF celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, we invite all of the San Diego region to join our Fifty & Forward Campaign to help us reach our ambitious goals:

  • Granting $500 million to realize our region’s greatest opportunities in three key areas: education, children and families and the environment
  • Raising $1 billion to help shape our community’s future.

“I’m thrilled that San Diego Foundation exists,” says Patty. “It’s an amazing resource for our community, and a gift to our region. It has helped me learn so much about the amazing organizations, spearheaded by incredible people who are, in fact, making a difference in our community.”

If you’re inspired by Patty’s story, or other stories of generosity, you too can join the Fifty & Forward Campaign. Whether through an endowment, donor-advised fund, planned gift, or online donation, support our efforts in a way that makes the most sense to you.

“There are so many people who haven’t been reached or who haven’t experienced the benefits of philanthropy, and I’d really like to see that grow. Especially in a time like this, where so many aid programs are being cut, now is the time to really pay attention to the needs of our community and the environment,” says Patty.

Let’s take the past 50 years of investment and impact into the next 50 years of possibility and promise.
