Members and friends,
We hope 2024 is off to a great start for you and your loved ones! It was great to see many of you at our Holiday Mixer at Barrio Glassworks in December. What an amazing place to host an event and witness creativity and skill in action! Special thanks to the staff at Barrio Glassworks and Renee Cohen and our events committee for coordinating such a fun way to celebrate.
Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF) received over 60 Letters of Intent (LOI) for this year’s grant cycle. Our grants committee will be busy over the next couple of months reviewing full applications and conducting site visits for our finalists. We at CCF thank them for their time and diligence and look forward to funding projects that promote civility, unity, community building and concern for the common good.
We are also excited to be hosting a Spring Mixer towards the end of March. Please join us and invite a neighbor, friend, or colleague who we hope will join us in our collective philanthropy. Stay tuned for more details.
As always, we appreciate your help to build awareness and engagement. Please follow and share content from our Facebook page and check out CCF’s amazing website!
Thank you for being a part of Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and cheers to another impactful year!
With gratitude,
Bret Schanzenbach
CCF Board Chair
Member Spotlight: Alicia and Charles Foster
Charles and I moved to San Diego, from Palo Alto, after a 6 month tour (by VW camper of course) of the coast of the country in search of a place we wanted to raise our family. We settled in Del Mar in 1980 and lived there until we moved to La Costa Glen in October of 2022. Charles spent the first half of his career in the electronics industry and then was a founding partner in Blankinship and Foster Investment Advisers in Solana Beach. My career was spent in human resources and organizational development, primarily with The Center for Creative Leadership.
Our children are grown and flown so in between visits with them, and travels to new and interesting places, we felt that a wonderful way to get to know our new world, and delightful people in this northern neck of the woods, would be to join the Carlsbad Community Foundation.
While we are new to Carlsbad, and to CCF, we are not new to San Diego Foundation (SDF) and philanthropy. Charles and I opened our Donor Advised Fund at San Diego Foundation in March of 2001. As a new empty nester, I became one of the founding members of The San Diego Women’s Foundation in 2000, serving as Membership Chair and President. I also served on San Diego Foundation’s Scholarship and Strategic Planning committees. Charles was Chair of SDF Professional Advisors Committee, The United Way Investment Committee and the Salk Institute’s Planned Giving Committee.
We look forward to getting to know and enjoy the delights of Carlsbad, the needs of the community, and the delightful people of CCF who are motivated to give to this lovely community.
Grantee Spotlight: Showers of Blessings
In 2017, the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego (EDSD) saw a need in their community and rallied resources to address it. Each week, over 30 volunteers provide hot showers, breakfast, a change of clothing, haircuts and laundry services. As a CCF grantee organization in 2020 and 2022, Showers of Blessings (a program of EDSD) has been able to expand their services beyond meeting just these basic needs. The program also provides a full-service on-site health clinic with the addition of exam rooms, reduced waiting time and an increase in the number of homeless individuals as well as neighborhood residents using this service at no cost to them. In 2022, Showers of Blessings used CCF grant money to make vital facility upgrades to their clinic and purchase canopies to protect against rain and sun in their outdoor space. It provided services for 2,572 clients and engaged over 700 onsite volunteers, service providers and healthcare professionals.
