“Give where you live” is a principle that has been around forever but started in earnest in 1914 with the creation of the world’s first community foundation, The Cleveland Foundation.
At the time, Cleveland business owner Frederick H. Goff had a vision to partner with likeminded residents and pool charitable resources to make a difference in the community.
His idea translated into a foundation that would reshape the way community members cared for one another not just in Cleveland but around the nation and ultimately the world.
In San Diego, Goff’s community-focused vision has been realized through The San Diego Foundation and our eight Regional Affiliates: 4S Ranch-Del Sur, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Escondido, La Jolla, Oceanside, Ramona and Rancho Bernardo.
The Regional Affiliate Program brings friends, neighbors and local businesses together to create a culture of philanthropy in neighborhoods across San Diego. Given the size and diversity of our region, our challenges and opportunities vary widely depending on where we live. For example, our coastal cities face flooding and the growing impacts of climate change, while our inland communities are at heightened risk of wildfires.
Through the pooled giving model, each member is able to maximize the impact of their charitable gift and play an active role in advancing quality of life in the community where they live, work and enjoy. Members collaborate to identify the most pressing needs of the community then research, identify and decide on which nonprofit organizations to support annually.
Throughout the year, members come together for grant announcements, membership mixers and other networking events to celebrate the impact of local giving and socialize with likeminded friends and neighbors. Membership with each regional affiliate offers individuals an opportunity to get involved in important causes and build relationships with individuals who are making a difference in their community every day.
Thanks to the generosity of more than 1,000 members from eight different affiliate communities, from Ramona to Chula Vista, the Regional Affiliate Program has granted more than $6 million to nonprofit organizations strengthening the region and built an endowment of $5 million for future giving – a total of $11 million worth of impact in San Diego County.
The Regional Affiliate Program has become an opportunity for neighbors and businesses to give directly to the people and programs closest to home.
