November 14, 2016 (San Diego, CA) – The San Diego Foundation today announced a commitment of $1 million to City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s proposal to increase access, enhance green space and improve safety at Balboa Park. Support comes from The San Diego Foundation Balboa Park Endowment, established by a long list of passionate San Diego philanthropists who love Balboa Park.
The Balboa Park Restoration Initiative will transform Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama into a premier public space with 6.3 acres of restored car-free space, and provide greater access and opportunities for community members and visitors to the park. Park-goers will enjoy increased parkland, gardens and pedestrian-friendly plazas, with additional, restructured parking options.
The Foundation joins together with leaders from all sectors, including Balboa Park United, a collaboration of the park’s cultural institutions and leaders in philanthropy, to build a future for Balboa Park that increases access and opportunities for current and future generations.
“The San Diego Foundation supports our Balboa Park partners and values their contributions to our community of providing access to cultural and scientific education programs for all San Diegans, and support for tourism and jobs that benefit our regional economy” The San Diego Foundation President & CEO Kathlyn Mead declared. “Our Board of Governors has authorized a commitment of $1 million to the project if approved and funded. This gift will be part of a larger fundraising effort so all who love and are committed to improving Balboa Park for future generations can join us.”
Thanks to the vision of past and current Foundation donors who established endowments to support Balboa Park in perpetuity, The San Diego Foundation has granted millions to preserve, protect and enhance the park. The $1 million commitment marks another milestone in The Foundation’s long history of support for San Diego’s most recognizable community gathering place.
