November 13, 2024 – San Diego, CA –Demonstrating the continued generosity and commitment of its donors and partners to make a meaningful impact across the San Diego region, the San Diego Foundation (SDF) today announced it granted $114.5 million to 2,313 nonprofits in FY 2023-2024.

Released at the start of National Community Foundation Week (November 12 – 18), the SDF annual report shows the organization gave $94 million to directly benefit San Diego County nonprofits. These include those dedicated to improving access to education through scholarships; health and human services, such as food assistance, mental health services, and housing; and the environment, through conservation efforts, environmental education and advocacy.

“Our donors and partners continued to step up in extraordinary ways last year to support nonprofits and communities that are furthest from opportunity,” said Mark Stuart, President and CEO, San Diego Foundation. “With nearly $400 million in grantmaking since July 2021, together, we are making progress towards more just, equitable and resilient communities that provide access to opportunity for all San Diegans.”

Highlights from SDF’s 2023-2024 annual report include:

  • A record-breaking $4.9 million in scholarships to expand access to higher education for 1,200 San Diego students through the Community Scholarship Program.
  • $1.4 million in emergency response funding to support survivors of historic floods in the region by providing more than 16,000 services addressing basic needs, such as food, shelter, and healthcare, and home remediation and repair.
  • $1.3 million in grants to local nonprofits through the Early Childhood Initiative, in partnership with the Dr. Seuss Foundation, which supports San Diego’s 200,000 children, ages 0 – 5, and their families through access to affordable, quality childcare and support services.
  • $875,000 in combined grantmaking with the San Diego Women’s Foundation to expand mental health resources for children and young adults.
  • $42 million in state and federal grants secured to fund climate-resilient projects that will benefit communities in San Diego’s historic barrios.
  • Published the San Diego Economic Equity Report, in partnership with the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, that revealed how much work is needed to realize just, equitable and resilient communities that provide access to opportunity for all San Diegans.
  • The Foundation hosting its first-ever San Diego Fundraising Conference, which helped 400 local nonprofit professionals strengthen their fundraising capabilities to better serve diverse community needs.

The annual report unveiling comes on the heels of SDF announcing its 50th anniversary year and launching the Fifty & Forward grantmaking and fundraising campaign. Launched in 2021 and publicly announced in October 2024, the goal of the multi-year campaign is to award $500 million in grants to advance education, support children and families, and address environmental challenges, while fundraising $1 billion to help shape our community’s future. “For nearly 50 years, San Diegans have put their trust in San Diego Foundation to be responsible stewards of their philanthropic dreams and vision,” added Stuart. “As we begin the celebration of our milestone anniversary, we are continuing our mission to work towards a San Diego where every person can thrive, prosper and feel like they belong.”

The report also reveals that through the Foundation’s prudent fiscal management and shrewd investing, its assets grew from $1.4 billion in 2023 to $1.5 billion in 2024, resulting in a 7% increase over the previous fiscal year. This growth increases the Foundation’s and its fundholders capacity to award grants over time.
