July 17, 2024 – San Diego, CA – San Diego Foundation announced today the launch of the Community Impact Partners program, which taps local retirees to leverage their expertise and experience to address significant local issues, and its two first hires, Marty Adelman and Dale Fleming.

“Retired professionals can positively impact our communities by sharing their experience, knowledge and expertise,” said Katie Rast, SDF Director of Community Impact. “The Community Impact Partner program will support workforce re-engagement for experts who leverage their unique skills to produce positive outcomes in our communities.”

The first high-impact community project will focus on improving Black infant and maternal health outcomes in San Diego County. According to the San Diego Economic Equity Report, Black infants in San Diego County are twice as likely to be born at a low birth weight – identified as 2,500 grams (about 5.5 lbs.) or less by the World Health Organization – than White babies. Low birth weight is associated with poor health outcomes for babies and parents, including a higher likelihood of infant mortality.

Funded by the Del Mar Healthcare Fund and inspired by a similar program at The Dayton Foundation (Ohio), the SDF Community Impact Partners program will create positive outcomes for the San Diego community by matching retired experts with high-impact community projects through the work of part-time Partners. Program outcomes could include creating new tools, resources and insights that help move the needle on local issues.

According to the U.S. Census, 480,000 residents 65 years and older live in San Diego County. San Diego County has more than 12,000 nonprofit organizations, as reported in the 2023 State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report by the Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego.

The Community Impact Partners program seeks retired professionals with proven leadership and knowledge related to health and human services, health equity, or services that positively impact children and families. To apply for a Partner position, visit SDFoundation.org/careers.
