Monday, July 22 – San Diego, CA – San Diego Foundation (SDF) announced today that it has awarded a record-breaking $4.9 million in 1,555 college scholarships to expand higher education access for 1,272 local students. Scholarship recipients, the majority of whom are the first in their families to attend college and come from low-middle-income families, were recognized during the SDF annual scholarships celebration on Sunday, July 21.

“Through the Community Scholarship Program, San Diego Foundation is ensuring that local students’ preparation for college is matched with the financial support needed to succeed and grow our region’s future workforce,” said Mark Stuart.

Among the 2024 – 2025 scholarship recipients, 74% are first-generation college students, or the first in their immediate families to pursue higher education, and 95% of students are considered low-middle income, according to their Student Aid Index (formerly known as Earned Family Contribution) data.

Of the scholarship recipients, 41% identified as Latino/a and 16% as U.S.-born Black and/or African American. This is of particular note as the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. has stated that investing in Black and Latino/a students so they can compete for high-demand innovation jobs is critical to meet the projected regional demand for 20,000 new skilled workers each year and inclusive growth of the local economy.

Scholarship applications were submitted by more than 3,000 local high school, community college, graduate and adult re-entry students studying a variety of subjects, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); health sciences; business; and arts and education, among others. Of those who received scholarships, 66% were affiliated with a college access and readiness program such as AVID, Reality Changers and TRIO/Upward Bound.

The Community Scholarship Program is made possible through the generous donor support of 154 unique charitable funds at San Diego Foundation and is the largest in the region outside of the university system. Since 1997, the program has awarded more than $53 million to more than 14,000 college students from San Diego.
