San Diego schools aim to develop well-rounded individuals, which is no easy task considering the region’s size and scope.
Take for example, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). SDUSD serves a large, extremely diverse group, made up of more than 130,000 students representing over 15 ethnic groups and 60 languages and dialects.
While SDUSD continues to find new ways to develop and serve its students, the district remains one of the most well-known urban school districts in the country. This is due in large part to the variety of opportunities, from STEM-based learning to visual and performing arts education, which create a well-rounded student learning experience.
Local Schools Paving the Way
Academic success is measured in many ways but to gain a deeper understanding of the impact our schools have on San Diego youth, it’s important to look at the specific programs and schools doing great work.
Throughout San Diego County, elementary and high schools are evolving their curriculums to develop students who are ready for the future.
Grossmont High School in El Cajon offers a range of career pathways – education, transportation, health, arts, IT and engineering – that allow students to pursue their passions and develop their expertise in a designated field. In addition, the school is known statewide for its success through the arts – Grossmont High School was one of only seven California schools to receive an award as a California Distinguished Visual and Performing Arts school in 2013. And if you haven’t already, we encourage you to attend a performance put on by the theatre program, which has multiple first-place victories in San Diego’s DramaFest.
Oceanside High School (OHS) is another example of a local school helping students thrive. OHS focuses its curriculum on critical thinking, problem solving, marketable work, life-long learning, effective communication and health. And with support from the OHS Foundation, students have the help they need to grow in an educational environment and pursue higher education.
At elementary education levels, schools like La Jolla Elementary School are using the arts to help students engage and think critically in their early-education years to help them flourish in high school and college.
