WHAT: The STEAM Leadership Series, sponsored by The San Diego Foundation and other local partners, will host an event, “Women in Biotech: New Frontiers in Medicine,” for 300 local female students from San Diego Unified School District to learn about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) experiences from San Diego’s leading female professionals and biotech executives. The event will teach young women how to build careers and jobs in San Diego’s innovation economy through linked learning pathways.
The event will feature a keynote speech from Dr. Catriona Jamieson, Chief for Regenerative Medicine at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. Dr. Jamieson, who company Impact Biomedicines was sold to Celgene for $1.1 billion in 2018, will talk about what drives early detection of cancers and the new frontiers in precision medicine, as well as share her personal story through science, biotech and patient advocacy as a doctor. Following the keynote, executives from Salk Institute, ILLUMINA and other leading companies will host a panel discussion and Q&A focusing on the opportunities available across San Diego’s innovation, science and technology economies.
