What is a Field of Interest Fund?
A field of interest fund, also known as a broad purpose fund, supports an area of “interest” that matters most to you.
After you define an area of charitable interest – as broad or narrow as you like – SDF evaluates nonprofit organizations and/or initiatives that effectively address needs in that area and makes grants that align with your charitable intent.
Field of interest funds are ideal for donors who want to:
- Make an impact in a specific area of interest but do not want to select a specific organization.
- Rely on SDF expertise and community knowledge to maximize grantmaking impact in a designated area/li>
- Leave a legacy through an estate gift or bequest.
Benefits of Field of Interest Funds
Field of interest funds combine your interests with strategic philanthropy. Benefits include:
- Targeted Impact: Support a cause or initiative you care about, such as homelessness, arts programming, the environment, education or others.
- Community Experts: Based on your interest area, SDF researches, identifies and vets nonprofits and initiatives to maximize your fund’s impact in that area. Our Giving Team has deep roots in the community, frequently partnering with local nonprofits and entities to address regional challenges and critical, emerging needs.
- Community Engagement: Connect with other donors in our network who share your passions.
- Give the Assets You Want: Contribute the assets you want to give to your fund, including cash, stock, or complex assets like mutual funds, real estate and more, and receive optimal tax benefits that calendar year.
- Tax-Smart: Donate appreciated securities to avoid capital gains tax and leverage your contribution for a larger philanthropic impact while maximizing tax deductions.
- Simplify Giving: An efficient giving vehicle that is easy to establish and effortless to maintain.
- Recognition: Name the fund after you or in honor of a family member, a friend or an organization (optional)
- Create a Legacy: Set up your field of interest fund as an estate gift or bequest, helping SDF make a lasting impact for the causes you care about in your honor.
